Klarna Merchant Fees: Calculate Your Net Revenue per Order
For online merchants, Klarna's Buy Now Pay Later service can boost conversions but comes at a cost.
This calculator breaks down the 5.99% + $0.30 per-transaction fee structure so you can see exactly how much you keep per order and project monthly and annual fee totals.
On a $100 order with 200 monthly transactions, Klarna fees total $6.29 per order ($1,258/month, $15,096/year), leaving $93.71 in net revenue.
Klarna's Fee Structure
Klarna charges merchants a percentage plus a flat fee per transaction:
Percentage Fee = Order Amount x 5.99%
Total Fee = Percentage Fee + $0.30
Net Revenue = Order Amount - Total Fee
Effective Rate = (Total Fee / Order Amount) x 100
Monthly Fees = Total Fee x Monthly Orders
Annual Fees = Monthly Fees x 12
The effective rate decreases as order amounts increase because the $0.30 flat fee becomes a smaller proportion of the total.
Worked Example: $100 Order with 200 Monthly Orders
- Percentage Fee: $100 x 5.99% = $5.99
- Add Flat Fee: $5.99 + $0.30 = $6.29 total fee
- Net Revenue: $100 - $6.29 = $93.71
- Effective Fee Rate: ($6.29 / $100) x 100 = 6.29%
- Monthly Fees: $6.29 x 200 = $1,258.00
- Annual Fees: $1,258 x 12 = $15,096
For comparison, standard credit card processing (2.9% + $0.30) on the same $100 order costs $3.20 — $3.09 less per order. Over 200 monthly orders, that is $618/month or $7,416/year in additional Klarna costs vs. credit cards.
Is Klarna Worth the Higher Fee?
Klarna's value proposition for merchants is higher conversion rates and larger average order values from BNPL. The key question is whether these benefits exceed the fee premium over standard payment processing.
On a $100 order, Klarna costs 3.1% more than credit cards (6.29% vs. 3.20%). If your current conversion rate is 3% and Klarna increases it to 3.1% or higher, the additional revenue from converted customers pays for the fee difference. Most BNPL studies report 20-30% conversion lifts in certain product categories, far exceeding the break-even threshold.
Reducing Klarna Fee Impact
Set minimum order thresholds for Klarna checkout. The $0.30 flat fee represents 0.30% of a $100 order but 1.50% of a $20 order. Restricting BNPL to orders above $50-75 keeps the effective rate closer to the base 5.99%.
With 200+ monthly orders generating $15,096 in annual fees, negotiate volume discounts with your Klarna account manager. Even a 0.5% rate reduction (to 5.49%) saves $100/month or $1,200/year.
