What this calculator estimates
This calculator divides a grocery subtotal, plus entered tax and tip, evenly among a group. It assumes both percentages apply to the original subtotal and that every person owes the same share.
How the equal split is calculated
Tax = grocery subtotal × tax rate ÷ 100
Tip = grocery subtotal × tip percentage ÷ 100
Total bill = grocery subtotal + tax + tip
Each person pays = total bill ÷ number of people
For the example, tax and tip are both zero, so Total Bill is $260 + $0 + $0 = $260. Each Person Pays is $260 ÷ 4 = $65.00. If tax or tip is entered, the calculator computes each amount from the subtotal before dividing the total equally.
How group size and add-ons change each share
More people reduce the base share, while tax and tip increase the amount being divided. This table compares different group sizes and percentage inputs for the same subtotal.

When an equal split is not the fairest split
An equal split works when everyone shares the groceries and add-ons equally. If one person bought separate items, has a different tax treatment, or did not participate in a tip, calculate that person’s share separately rather than dividing the entire receipt by the group size.
