The Billable Weight Formulas
The calculator selects the higher of actual and DIM weights, then derives four additional metrics from that comparison.

Determining the Billable Weight for a 12 lb Package
A shipper has a 12 lb package (12×10×8 inches) and a pre-calculated DIM weight of 15.5 lb using the carrier's DIM factor of 139.
- Billable Weight: max(12, 15.5) = 15.5 lb — DIM weight governs billing; package is billed as 15.5 lb.
- DIM Weight: 15.5 lb — Slight inflation over actual weight; carrier charges for volume consumed.
- Weight Overage: 15.5 − 12 = 3.5 lb — Modest overage; shipper is billed for 3.5 lb of space above physical weight.
- DIM vs. Actual Ratio: 15.5 / 12 = 1.29× — Moderately bulky; DIM weight is 29% above actual.
- Billing Surcharge: 15.5 − 12 = 3.5 lb worth reviewing — Reducing package volume could eliminate this surcharge.
- Package Density: volume = (12×10×8)/1728 = 0.5556 ft³; density = 12/0.5556 = 21.60 lb/ft³ — High density; compact for its weight.

Billable weight directly multiplies against the carrier's per-pound rate to determine shipping cost.
At $2.50/lb for ground domestic, the 3.5 lb surcharge costs $8.75 per shipment — seemingly modest, but across 1,000 shipments per month it totals $8,750/month.
The 21.60 lb/ft³ density here is above the typical air freight break-even density of 10–11 lb/ft³, meaning this package would be actual-weight-billed if shipped internationally by air (where DIM weight often uses factor 139 and produces different results than domestic ground).
High-density packages benefit from ground shipping; low-density packages pay disproportionate DIM penalties on air freight.
DIM Factor Variants by Carrier and Mode
The core formula remains the same — billable = max(actual, DIM) — but the DIM factor varies by carrier and service:
DIM Weight = (L × W × H) / DIM Factor
Common factors (dimensions in inches, weight in pounds):
- 139: FedEx and UPS (domestic and international), current standard
- 166: Legacy UPS/FedEx domestic ground (pre-2015 rate changes)
- 194: USPS retail ground (some services)
- 5,000: International air freight (dimensions in cm, weight in kg)
- 6,000: Some international air freight (cm/kg)
Using factor 166 instead of 139 on the same 960 cubic inches yields DIM = 960/166 = 5.78 lb — below actual weight, changing billable weight from 15.5 to 12 lb and eliminating the surcharge entirely.
